Visit Tasmania – Bruny Island Self Drive Tour
Bruny island is a 362 square kilometer Island located off the Southeastern coast of Tasmania. It is Tasmania’s fourth largest island.
The D’Entrecasteaux Channel separates it from Tasmania’s mainland.
Below is a video that shows the sights of Bruny Island.
There is no public transport on the island so the best way to explore Bruny island is to take your car on the ferry and do a self-drive tour on the island. There are also organised tours that you can book.
The island in the north has good sealed roads but the South part of the island you will come across unsealed roads. If hiring a car make sure you are aware of that and also check with the rental company about being able to drive on roads or not.
Bruny Island Ferry
The Sealink Bruny Island Ferry departs from Kettering which is about a 30 to 40 minute drive from Hobart. The first ferry departs at 6:10 a.m and the last Ferry at 7 pm returning from Bruny Island. The price varies slightly depending on the time of your travel.

SuperSaver, $36 dollars if you arrive early around 8AM the regular price is $48 and there’s another saver option of $42. it takes around 15 minutes each way. You drive your car onto the ferry on an open deck and you can get outside of your car and walk around to enjoy the view.
Truganini Lookout at the neck

Once on Bruny Island the places to visit include Truganini Lookout at the neck. There are about 200 stairs to climb but the view at the top is well worth the effort. It gives you a bird’s eye view of the spectacular natural landscape of both North and South Bruny Island the neck is an important habitat for Bruny Island’s native wildlife.
At dusk you can observe short-tailed Shear Waters and little penguins returning to their Burrows in the sand dunes the best time to see these cute animals is during the warmer months of September to February.
Adventure Bay

One of the top 10 Australian beaches rated in 2023 by Tourism Australia. Adventure Bay is known for its beautiful seven kilometer long east facing beach. It has many large gum trees surrounding the beach and the Cliffs of fluted cape on the southern end.
In 1642 when Abel Tasman attempted to land at Adventure Bay, then nameless he failed due to stormy seas. In 1773 a British captain Tobias Fernaux came in his ship to Adventure Bay and gave it its name he anchored his ship in the bay for five days.
After becoming separated from Captain Cook in the HMS Resolution during Cook’s second voyage James Cook and William Bligh followed in turn seeking fresh water fuel new lands to chart and respite for months at sea.
The Adventure Bay General Store is just opposite the Adventure Bay on the other side of Adventure Bay Road. It is well stocked with everything from meat fruit and veggies to hardware items, fishing gear and gifts. It also is the only place on the island where you can get petrol, although it’s probably best to fill up on the mainland before heading over to Bruny Island unless you want to support the small business.
There are picnic tables near the beach. It’s very handy to grab some food from the store and then enjoy a nice picnic here during a day trip to Bruny Island. Also why not try a national pie while you’re there. Also there are plenty of other food options.
Cape Bruny Lighthouse

The Cape Bruny Lighthouse is located on the southwestern edge of the cape on south Bruny island. It is the second oldest extinct Lighthouse Tower in Australia and it is the longest man lighthouse in history. It was first lit in March 1838 and was eventually decommissioned on 6 August 1996. Cape Bruny
Lighthouse offers spectacular panoramic views of the rugged South Bruny coastline. It can be quite windy and cool even in the summer so make sure you pack some warm clothes when visiting the lighthouse.
Get Shucked Oysters

Best oysters ever good price Bruny island is well known for its excellent local produce fresh oysters and seafood artisan cheese chocolate and fudge honey berries. My favorite are the oysters. If you’re an oyster fan like me make sure your visit Get Shucked. I had the best oysters I’ve ever had there it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. If oysters aren’t your thing there are many other food options including takeaway food at Alana still.
